Murayama Kaita, a prodigious Japanese painter, novelist, and poet who passed away in 1919 at the age of 22, left behind an enduring and timeless body of work. In his latest film, "Dear Kaita Ablaze," director Sato Hisayasu, known for films like "The Eye's Dream," "Muscle," and "The Bedroom," presents a surreal, time-crossing, meta-layered exploration of Murayama's artistry, originality, and legacy. The film centers around a young woman named Azami, deeply fascinated by Murayama's paintings, a young man Saku who believes he is Murayama or his spiritual echo due to his ability to hear unusual frequencies, and a group of four young performers with psychic abilities. These characters come together through their shared passion for Murayama’s work, recreating it through performative dances during a journey to a mysterious cave known as Agartha. Sato Hisayasu, celebrated for his explorations of madness and lust in pinku films, returns to the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) with "Dear Kaita Ablaze," a hyper-dense, obsessive, and ambitious work that seamlessly blends surrealism with science fiction and mysticism, weaving seemingly disconnected events into a grand finale.
